PREPARATORY QUESTION:

What value do you place on God’s Word?

The Protestant Reformation was defined by its commitment to the Bible as the ultimate source of truth and authority. This principle, known as Sola Scriptura, challenged the practice of placing church authority and tradition on a level with Scripture. The Reformers did not reject faithful teachers or the proper place of church tradition; rather, they insisted that all teaching must be tested by the infallible and inerrant Word of God. Unfortunately, in our own day, there is still a danger of neglecting the Bible in favor of the words of religious leaders, traditions, and personal feelings.

In anticipation of the difficult days ahead, Paul urges Timothy to remain steadfast in what he has learned and firmly believed (). Timothy had known the sacred Scriptures from childhood, and Paul reminds him that these writings are able to make him “wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (v. 15). The Scriptures do more than offer moral advice: they reveal the way of salvation through Christ. Timothy is therefore called to continue in the Word he has received, rather than turn to another source of truth.

Paul then explains why the Scriptures can be trusted: “All Scripture is breathed out by God” (v. 16). Although God used human authors, He is the ultimate source of His Word. Because Scripture comes from God, it is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. God uses His Word to instruct us in the truth, expose our errors, correct our ways, and train us to live in obedience to Him. Paul gives the purpose in verse 17: “that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Scripture is sufficient to make us wise for salvation in Christ and to equip us for a life of faith and godliness. For this reason, it possesses the final authority in matters of faith and practice.

Dearly beloved in Christ Jesus, the Word of God is non-negotiable and irreplaceable. We must never elevate personal feelings or claims of revelation, the teachings of revered Christian leaders, or the traditions of our churches above the Word of God. This does not diminish the value of biblical commentaries, sermons, or the teaching ministry of the church. Rather, each must be judged by its faithfulness to Scripture. When God’s Word confronts what we believe, desire, or practice, are we willing to submit to its authority? May God bless you as you resolve to study and know the Scriptures, to trust in the Christ whom they reveal, and to hold the Word of God above all else.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU MEDITATE ON THE WORD:

Is the Word of God the final authority in matters of faith and practice for you, even when it challenges your desires or opinions?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, grant me, by Your Holy Spirit, the grace and boldness to remain steadfast in Your Word. Help me to see Christ clearly in the Scriptures, receive their correction, and reject any teaching, feeling, or church tradition that contradicts Your truth. Equip me through Your Word for every good work. In Christ Jesus’ name, amen.
